What do you know about MY country? (MEXICO)

As some of you might know, past week there was a notice where Burger King was forced to pull out a commercial campaign for a hamburger called "Texican" in Spain. In the advertises, you could see a handsome northamerican cowboy, standing tall with the traditional cowboy outfit, next to him you could see a tiny little wrestler with a mask and a poncho featuring the Mexican flag.

With my family we talked about this, and we still wonder about the image that the world has of us, the mexican people and our traditions?

This is the question I would like to ask you all, I know that there are people from all around the world and my country is well known for many reasons and some people loves my country for many reasons too.

But you, my friend from other country, how do you picture Mexico?

How do you imagine a traditional outfit from Mexico?

What traditional food you have heard that it's 100% mexican?

What food do you eat in your local mexican restaurant?

Why do you think that the Burger King campaign was taken out of circulation?

What's the sport that's considered as 100% ours?

Besides Cancun, Acapulco and Cabo, and all the beaches, can you share with me another turistic city wich is not a beach? Why is it turistic?

If you answered this just with what you know of my country, I really appreciate it, if you peeked in a website to give the right answers, great too! So you will know a little bit more about my country too!

If you found something new about my country by reading this, share it with us! I'd love that other countries could meet the real Mexico!

And if you want to do this Q&A about YOUR country, let me know about it so I can do it too! Let's share our knoledge and love for our lands people!!! Why do you love your country so much?? I'd love to know!

I love my country not bcause I was born here, it's because despite all the bad things that happens, my country is unique in many aspects, the culture, traditions, a really fun history, great old movies, lots of wonderful values that most have lost, but lots of people still have them. And many many many other reasons I have to proudly say that I love Mexico that I wouldn't be able to write it here!!!

So, if you have time, come and share your answers with me!

Have a wonderful night!
Love
Diana ^^

I did hear about that ad. It's good that Burger King pulled it because it seemed really disrespectful. It's sad that it was even made in the first place...

I have to admit, I don't know all that much about Mexican culture, but it does sound really interesting. I know about some of the Day of the Dead traditions and such. But with things like food, I think what we see here in the U.S. is more of an Americanized version of what we think Mexican culture is. Same with other cultures like Chinese, Italian, and so on. It's sad really, it would be better to know what the cultures are really like!

The advertisement company f*cked all bcause they didn't know that the mexican flag can't be used commercially O_O The illustration was just the cherry on the top of the cake!

I've actually been to Mexico before, I have a basic idea besides what the average uneducated person knows.

How do you imagine a traditional outfit from Mexico?

For festivities, if I remember correctly, for women, there were some long brightly colored skirts of various colors, either long sleeved almost high necked blouses or something almost like a "peasant blouse" ( [link] ), with some kind of shawl draped over their shoulders.

But the average person, from what I've seen, wears the same kinds of every day clothing we do here in the US and all over the world.

What traditional food you have heard that it's 100% mexican?

If anyone says nachos, they need to be smacked.
Personally, I LOVE love love love Mexican chocolate. Makes for a FANTASTIC drink! What about Polenta Pasticciata?

What food do you eat in your local mexican restaurant?

Actually, there really AREN'T any Mexican restaurants in my area. There used to be the El Coyote, but it went bankrupt and really, it was TexMex and pure crap. But there IS this place in Newton, about a 30 minute drive from me, called Salsa Restaurant, that really DOES offer authentic Mexican food and it's flipping AWESOME! There's also Teté Peruvian Int'l Cuisine, a little true Peruvian place, REALLY tiny, but VERY very very tastey. The recipes that the owner uses were originally from his mother in Peru. ^_^

Why do you think that the Burger King campaign was taken out of circulation?

Because the people are Burger King were being completely ignorant. Nuff said.

What's the sport that's considered as 100% ours?

Charrería?

Besides Cancun, Acapulco and Cabo, and all the beaches, can you share with me another turistic city wich is not a beach? Why is it turistic?

Tulum. Firstly, there are the Mayan temples and the GORGEOUS cliffs. I know there is a nude beach NEAR a section of the cliffs, but I'm not sure if that's considered part of the temple area.

I have to say I feel the same way about New Jersey that you do about Mexico. Not just because it's where I was born, but because it really IS a very interesting state here in the US, there is a hell of a lot of history here, given that it's one of the oldest states in the US, TONS of tv shows and movies were either made here or were / are based here ( Sopranos, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, every single Kevin Smith movie ever made, the first Friday the 13th movie { Camp Crystal Lake, baby! }. We have the Jersey Devil, we have jughandles, we don't have beaches here, they're all "the shore" and you NEVER go to the shore or to the beach, you go "down the shore", we have the best tomatoes in the US, and it's only people from out of state that call it "Joisey". No New Jersian says "Joisey", we say "Jersey", but hey, out of all of the states, we get made fun of the most, and oddly, it's amusing ^_^;.

Oh, and BTW, my exit is 27B ( the Parkway doesn't run through my county, so our area uses route 80 for that joke ).

You know, I've been to Mexico and found it absolutely wonderful. The people were kind and friendly, the food was great (apart from pancakes with peas on them :D ), and the places were remarkable. I never got over to Chichen Itza (no beach there, but I do recall a beach at Tulum), but I'd like to go there and to Mexico City one day; I spent most of my trip in Yucatan.
After spending a little time there and having lived in Arizona, I'd have to say that "Mexican" food in America is not actually Mexican.

When I picture Mexico, I think of a few things... Beaches, deserts with cactus, and jungles with ancient ruins.

I think Bee-chan covered the traditional women's clothing, and men wore pants and tunics.

True Mexican foods... horchata (ok, so it's a drink), pozole, tamales.

What I eat depends on the restaurant. There are a lot of not-quite fast food places that have sprung up over the part few years that I think may qualify as "Tex-Mex", as well as some slightly nicer restaurants that have delicious green chili burritos with rice and beans.

I suspect the ad was pulled because it was very US-centric, with the USA played up as the cowboy hero and Mexico treated as small and comical.

I think soccer could be considered to originate with the ball game from Mexico (I can't remember what the game was called, but it was played in Aztec and Mayan times, and possibly before)

Non-beach tourist cities: Teotihuacan (pre-Aztec ruins), Tenoctitlan (Aztec capital), Oaxaca (ruins... Mayan???)
