In need of advice

Hello, thank you very much for all your support on my last journal. It's been a hard month again, we lost 2 cats in 2 weeks, both because of stupid accidents, so it's been really difficult again for all of us, mostly for me.

I come to my DA journal because of the diversity of the friends I have here, to ask you for help and advice on 2 different matters.

First. I'm decided to make a big investment and purchase a new camera. A digital SLR. The options I have are a Canon 30D, a Canon XSi and, Canon XS, a Sony Alpha A200 and a Nikon D40. All of them are expensive, that's why I will ask my family for help. My first choice would be the Canon 30D or hopefuly a Canon 40D if it is available in my town this year.

If you know about photography, please help me with this. I've only had normal digital cameras, and well, my semi-pro Sony DSC-H7 and I want to jump to a more professional digital camera, as I'm also waiting for my dad to ask his old camera to a friend he lent it to a few years ago for him to use it for work. That old camera is a Canon, that still uses film O.O I've never tried one of those, so I'm excited about it.

So if you have any advice, it will be deeply appreciated. I'm planning to tell my family and friends that instead of buying me a random present, they can give me the $$ to start a fund and get the cash I need for my new camera.

I might build a photography portfolio, because I printed yesterday some old pics and OMG, some of them are really good! >.< yes, my cats are good models!

And the second matter in this journal is to ask you for a favor.

I've been tracking scholarships for short courses focused on art. I've found a foundation that offers a course in Valencia, Spain but this year is too late to send my application. It's a 6 month's master course and I might probably aply for it next year. It helps you with more than 1000 euros that covers the 85% of the course's cost and I only have to pay $200 euros for the rest. 850 euros as monthly help for home and food and well. I would only have to pay for my own expenses.

But if you know of any short course's scholarship that suits a starter on art, let me know, please! I'm looking for courses either on Canada, Italy (english spoken or that offers a basic Italian language course), any country of Europe that's english spoken or Spain (highly preferred!). Of course, with a scholarship because I can't afford the whole cost of any course :(

If you know of any of this courses that could help me, let me know! I won't be able this year, but perhaps in 1 or 2 years I'll be able to afford it.

I would deeply appreciate it

I don't mention USA because of the Visa. I need to have a good amount of money on my bank account and a steady job to secure the visa aproval. I can't do it yet :( But if you know of any course there, let me know too so I can save the info and if I get the visa, I would definetely take the chance.

I appreciate all your help and patience, thank you for understanding that this has been a very tough year for me, hopefuly things will be on its place soon and I'll be able to breath again. In the mean time, just let me organize my ideas and I'll be able to deliver all the stuff I still owe to all of you!

Big hugs, have a wonderful weekend.

Well my uncle use to take profession pictures for national geographic magazine. He always tells me when buying a camera Olympics is the best *my current camera* Followed by Nikon and cannon. I had a lot of nikons in my time and I love them...never had a cannon. Another thing he says is look at the camera's functions. The simpler the better. There are many things in camera's now a days that are just extra to make it look better but you don't need.....One think you do want is the macro feature it really helps get those amazing close ups! I can't tell you anything specific about those camera's since I am happy with mine and have not been looking for a new one. I do hope this helps. And I am sure someone on here knows all the ins and out of those cameras ^_~ As for the other one...I can't really help you...The school I went to had no scholarships available it was a short course and cheap....but you need to know either Italian or some English.....If you do find one you like and need help in reading Italian to see if it's the course for you. Feel free to ask me for help!

Olympics is the best

OLympus....steer away from, their sensor is just awful and their lens lineup is very limited.

That being said the best camera is the one that fits the best in your hands. Lenses are far more important than anything. Nikon, Canon, Sony, and Pentax, all offer a massive array of lenses, and 3rd party like Sigma & Tamron are plentiful. I myself shoot with a Minolta dslr (now Sony) and one thing you need to ask yourself is "Anti-shake important to you?" It has saved my butt many times. Both Pentax and Sony have this in camera where as Nikon and Canon do not. That is a big factor IMO. Steer clear of the Nikon d40, it has a limited lens mount on it, and if you do go Nikon, go with a d89 or d90, do NOT go with the d5000 for reasons I just said. The Sony is nice, if you want Live View step up to the a300. Canon--see if you can snag a d50. Expensive but VERY nice! Keep a watch out for used Nikon d200s, they are really cheap right now!

I just use bare-basics in my photography. I own an (old) canon 10D, and a small collection of basic lenses.

I'll likely stick with canon, just because it's what I own, but I am no professional. I just shoot for the hella it, and with the camera available to me *G*

I guess I'm not a professional either, but I don't want to get another camera as the one I have. I've gone from a regular Sony DSC-W1, then got a Sony DSC-H7 as a gift and now I don't want to go lower than this ^^

Of course, I've seen results with Canon Cameras through the internet and well, I find them appealing for me ^^ So I want to try with the brand to go for more options than the ones that my current DSC-H7 offers. >.<

Thanks for the info! I'm now sad bcause the current canon cameras are really expensive here! T.T

The 10D's got used for under $300. They're good, sturdy cameras, and cheaper than a good point and shoot. Mine has done well for me :)

I can't afford to buy my dream camera yet, but am saving for it. I'd love a faster camera, with more MPs. Until then, the 10D works GREAT for me, and is a great learning DSLR :)

Thank you VERY MUCH for your detailed comment. I've gone from the first digital camera from Sony (the one with round purple body with only 1.2 Mp), then through a Sony DSC-W1 and there was when I found out that I like to take pics a lot. Then got a Sony DSC-H7 as gift 2 years ago wich is my current camera to date and I realized that I like to take close ups to my cats and to lots of stuff >.<

So I guess that my next step is going up with a little more professional feeling kind of camera.

Here where I live we have limited options. As I posted, the only Canon availables are the 30D and the Rebels XSi and XTi I believe. I just saw the Canon 50D listed on 2 local retailers and OMG it's like $2,350 usd (wich is around $33,000 mexican pesos). Nikon are even more limited here too. Sony has the wider selection of cameras, but somehow I believe that's time for a change. And maybe when prices drop even more, after having the Canon 50D (wich I think I'll definetely choose to be my next one), I will get a Sony Alpha kit for backups ^^

I'm more an amateur, like when I'm paintig. I don't know much about this disciplines, I just love to make them. So about detailed characteristics of the cameras I don't know what to go after. Your advice was so clear to follow, really, very helpful!

Again, thank you very very much! Now I just need to save for it! hehehe At least I'll have my family helping me (for my bday I told them to give me $ instead of any last minute present, so I can save for this camera ^^)

Big hugs!!!
